CONGRESS OF SOUTH AFRICAN STUDENTS MEDIA STATEMENT

ATT: MEDIA, COSAS MEMBERS, DOE, TEACHERS UNION, PYA FORMATIONS

SUB: Isolation of COSAS Secretary General Comrade Teboho Magafane from the
collective

The Congress of South African Students would first and foremost, wish to send its revolutionary condolences to the Mapiti Family. Comrade Mapiti Matsena who is a former Deputy Regional Chairperson of the ANC in Tshwane and was a member of the Provincial Executive Commit of the ANC in Gauteng has sadly been reported to be killed by an unknown man in his home on the 15th of July 2020.

We call upon the SAPS not to make an arrest only, but also investigate the ulterior motive behind his
killing.

“O robale ka Kgotso Mapiti”.

On the isolation of the SG.

COSAS has come to attention the frivolous and disgusting attempts by senior leaders of the ANC and ANC NYTT to isolate its Secretary General from the decision of the collective.

The Congress of South African Students sat for its NEC meeting and took a resolution to Shut down
all schools across the country.

The SG, as guided by the constitution shall always communicate decisions on behalf of the
organization. We must mention and place in your attention that the SG is not COSAS and his name may not be dragged into the mud because of his vocality in the matter. We have a strong belief that these attempts are not even about the shutdown but an unnecessary vigour of trying to destroy him.

We are also glad that the ANCYL, YCLSA, SASCO and all other PYA Formations supports the call for shutting down of schools.

We must warn those leaders that we will shift our focus to them and it shall not end well.

For an exceptionally long time the ANC has not had young vibrant people speaking on behalf of the voiceless and now that there is, they are intimidated. We are not going to run the Organization through their emotions.

For that matter, COSAS will even go as far as contesting them in positions of power since they are old, not innovative and clueless.

End.

Issued by the COSAS 19th NEC.
